THE FOTOGRAPHER MADALENA SCHWARTZ, THE DANCE TROUPE DZI CROQUETTES AND CULTURAL RESISTANCE DURING THE BRAZILIAN DICTATORSHIP

MONDAY, APRIL 22
4:00PM
Lucy Ellis Lounge, FLB 1080

Of Hungarian Jewish origin, Madalena Schwartz (1921-93) had a late start as a photographer and quite by accident. However, she quickly went on to become Brazil’s premier portrait photographer, choosing always to works in black and white. However, early in her career she became fascinated with São Paulo’s vibrant countercultural nightlife and in the early 70s she began working closely with the highly transgressive and contestational queer dance troupe, Dzi Croquettes, and some of her most important photography is made up of behind-the-scenes images of the members of the group, which went on to enjoy immense success in Paris. This presentation will discuss the importance of Schwartz photography, with an emphasis on her work with Dzi Croquettes.

Lecture co-sponsored by the Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies and the Lemann Institute for Brazilian Studies

LATIN AMERICA: STATE FORMATION AND THE EMERGENCE OF NEW FORMS OF PROPERTY OVER NATURAL RESOURCES

The presentation will be about the emergence of a new form of territorial organization in Latin American countries: the territorial community. This is in part an answer to environmental questions in the relation between rural communities and nation-states. It is argued that, while it is true that “the environment” has been an important element in the transformation of territorial institutions that transformation has been particularly profound in Latin America. Whereas in Europe and in the USA the development of territorial institutions do not challenge the public/private distinction upon which modern states are built, in Latin America territorial communities have emerged as organizations that put into question that fundamental distinction. The paper offers a brief overview of the drivers and the paths through which this is happening in different Latin American countries.

Doctor in Law and specialist of environmental law, Prof. Azuela de la Cueva was appointed Federal Attorney General for Environmental Protection in 1994. His the author, among many publications, of Sustainable Development: Towards and Environmental Policy

Lecture co-sponsored by the Social Development of Environmental Polices (SDEP)

 OPPORTUNITIES
  •     “Priority” Campus Deadline for FULBRIGHT GRANTS (for research, graduate study, or English teaching beginning in Fall 2014)
 JULY 1, 2013

Application materials should be submitted online, with letters of recommendation sent to topscholars@illinois.edu:

            1.   A complete Fulbright Application, submitted online through the Fulbright site.
When submitted, the application comes directly to our office, and we can release it back to you. You should attach your Transcripts from all colleges attended to the online application as well. Otherwise, no supplementary materials or foreign language reports are needed at this time. The crux of the application are the *Essays:
a)      Personal Statement of no more than one page, single-spaced: Describe who you are; your intellectual growth, experiences, and goals; especially as they relate to your Fulbright proposal.
b)     Statement of Proposed Study or Research of no more than two pages (or one page for English Teaching Assistantships), single spaced: Where are you planning to go? How are you going to spend your time overseas (especially addressing feasibility)? Who (or what institution) will you be working with? Why is your time best spent at this overseas location?

            2.   3-4 Letters of Recommendation –primarily academic   These may be draft letters sent via e-mail to topscholars@illinois.edu. Do not request letters online through the Fulbright system.
A form required for English Teaching Assistantships is at http:// topscholars.illinois.edu/priorityFulbright.html.

*Note:  Be creative and interesting. Strong essays paint a picture, tell a story, or demonstrate rather than simply tell the reader about your area of proposed study and reasons for pursuing a Fulbright. As such, the personal statement should not amount to a narrative rendition of your résumé! How do you hope to make a difference within your discipline and further cultural understanding?

Why should I submit a priority application? A campus committee will review application materials submitted by the priority deadline and provide feedback on your application’s strengths and weaknesses. Applicants and recommendation writers may then revise their work over the summer before officially submitting an application by the required campus deadline of September 3.

What if I miss the priority deadline? You are still encouraged to submit materials before the fall deadline. The difference is that you will receive feedback solely from the National and International Scholarships Program and not from other reviewers across campus.

Additional information is available at http://topscholars.illinois/priorityFulbright.html

  •    WOULD YOU LIKE TO SHARE A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOUR HOME COUNTRY AND NATIVE LANGUAGE WITH 9TH GRADER STUDENTS FROM CHAMPAIGN –URBANA?
The CUScholars Program (a program of the Champaign Urbana Schools Foundation for 9-12 grade students) is holding its 2nd annual Freshman Focus Workshop on June 4th at Parkland College.  Students will participate in several mini-sessions throughout the day on various topics.

We would like to include foreign language/cultural understanding as one of these mini-sessions.  Each session is 45 minutes long and would be repeated 4-5 times that day.  I am looking for people who would be willing to present sessions to students that would include some language and a little cultural background on your country, as well as say a little bit about how important knowing a foreign language can be in the job market. We would like to have languages that are not already taught in the local high schools (Spanish, French and German).
Please contact me if you can help with this enrichment activity for high school students.
