- GRADUATE MINOR IN LATIN AMERICAN STUDIES
The
graduate minor in Latin American Studies will require the student to complete
12 graduate hours; 8 of the hours must be at the 500-level.
- Area Coursework: A minimum of 8 graduate hours at the 400/500-level from courses in two different departments approved by CLACS every semester.
- The Center updates and posts approved courses in our website and announce them through our listserv. Our Center has approximately 104 faculty affiliated from different departments in campus, and we approve their courses as part of our curriculum. The Center will record the approved courses on a master list to be kept in the unit that will be used to certify that students took approved courses during their studies in the minor.
- Language Component: At least 4 hours in language coursework taken in any Latin American language (Portuguese, Spanish or Native American Language or Haitian Creole) while enrolled in the Graduate Minor program.
- In the case that not enough or advance language courses are offered, The Center also accepts as equivalent area courses taught in these languages, i.e. literature class taught in Portuguese or Spanish.
- If the chosen language course is at the 400-or 500 level it may count towards the required 12 hours for Graduate Minor. We anticipate that students registering in the Minor already have knowledge of Latin American language.
- If the Student's Master's thesis or doctoral dissertation deals with a country from Latin America and the Caribbean, we advise students in this minor to speak with their advisor about including a committee member from the minor area.
- We recommend that the courses taken for the minor not be applied to course requirements in the students' Master's or PhD program

14 years offering our program in interdisciplinary qualitative field
methods, as well as Spanish and Quechua language classes, with a continued internship
option in the Peruvian Andes. This year we offer our June Solstice
seminar: June 7th-27th, a 3 week training program
after which students may work and/or pursue their own research objectives in
health, education, agriculture, social development, with municipal institutes
and civic organizations, depending on acquired skills, demonstrated abilities
and interests. Length of the post-training internship is adapted to students’
needs with respect to academic and professional requirements. The intensive field
methods and language component is equivalent to 1 semester of university study;
we provide participants with a qualitative letter of evaluation and
grade. Upon successful completion of the

year CSW has partnered with the University of New Mexico’s Latin American
and Iberian Institute to facilitate the awarding of academic credit for
student participants: http://laii.unm.edu/abroad/summer-quechua-program.php.
The combined undergraduate and graduate seminar is held at the
center's rural base, an adobe lodge on an ecological ranch in the Cordillera
Blanca mountain range of the Callejón de Huaylas, 7 hours northeast of
Lima. Coursework provides in-depth orientation to theory and practice in field
investigation that emphasizes methods in Participatory Action Research
and Andean Ethnography centered on themes of Climate Change with respect
to Ecology, Health, Education, Social Justice, Agrobiodiversity, Community
Organization and related topics. Students have the opportunity to actively
engage in ongoing projects and programs with Quechua communities to develop
effective interactional field abilities and required language skills for
placement in appropriate contexts to provide community support and research. In
addition, the training seminar provides excursions to museums, archaeological
sites, glacial lakes and hotsprings; optional recreational activities include

Anthropology
445 CRN 59445) "Primate Behavior, Ecology, Ecosystems Sustainability, and
Conservation” and offers each student the opportunity to conduct an
individualized field research project on the behavior, ecology, and
conservation of one of 3 species of wild primates (mantled howler monkeys,
white-faced capuchins, and spider monkeys) in a rainforest in northeastern
Costa Rica. I work closely with each student in helping develop their
research questions, a set of hypotheses to test, methods of data collection and
analysis, and writing up their results in the form of a scientific paper.
The students also visit cattle ranches, banana pineapple and coffee
plantations, learn about Costa Rican history, food and culture, and see
first-hand how local and global economic market demands have affected
environmental change in Central America.
Anthro 445 is a 4 credit course. Student’s can register now
for the course. It is listed as a second 8 week course during Fall 2015.
Students also have to complete an application on the Study Abroad website
(http://studyabroad.illinois.edu/)
We begin meeting once per week in mid-October so that students can learn
about Costa Rica, the tropical rainforest, and begin developing their research
project. Then from December 26-January 17th, we stay at La Suerte
Biological Research Station in northeastern Costa Rica and students complete
their research projects. Many students have used this research experience
to write a senior honor’s thesis or have presented the results of their
research at local meetings.
